It's the only one which has the right balance of management and development, with actual depth, feedback, and charm. It's basically because it's the only good city builder game out there, it seems. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but it seems like I'm panning for gold in a river that's long-since been emptied out during the city builder "heyday" several years ago.ĭon't get me wrong, I still enjoy SimCity 4 in all its pixelated glory, but that's not because it's a good game. Is the city builder genre really dead? Or is there still some hope for it? Because I sure as hell haven't seen a single game worthy of the true city builder genre since Caesar IV, and even that's not much newer than SC4 is. Something fresh! Something I haven't already sank my teeth into and found out it's a rotten chunk of spoiled horsemeat -cough- Cities Skylines -cough. Angers me, even! Having played SC4 for about 10 or so years now (in my usual style having been way beyond "fashionably" late to the party) I'm starved for something new. games that don't cross the CB genre with anything else (so no RTS, no survival, just plain ol' city building "classic") seems like it's a dead genre.Īnd that's what frustrates me. And yes, there have been some games with city builder elements that I've liked, stuff like Surviving Mars, Frostpunk, and indeed, a few of the latter Anno games. But it seems they just don't love me back, because every single pure city builder I've played since SC4 has left me cold and unimpressed. I'm digressing from my point too much here. Of course I sucked at the game, and of course when I tried to play it again a few months ago or so, I couldn't stand the flat graphics, the extremely simple gameplay, and the utter lack of feedback. I've loved city builders ever since I was old enough to hold and manipulate a computer mouse, playing the original SimCity on my older brother's crappy boxy PC back in the early 90s, and I loved every moment of it. But none of the above have gotten it right the way SimCity 4 did. Sure, there've been some attempts, like that atrociously ugly New Cities thing, as well as Anno 1800 (which admittedly is really good but it's also an entirely different kinda game overall), and begrudgingly I also have to mention Cities Skylines. so here goes: I'm angry, actually outright angry, that SimCity 4 is almost two freakin' decades old and still hasn't been thoroughly topped in terms of city builders. Sorry for the kinda clickbaity title (and the angry rant), but I need to vent my frustration about this shit somehow and somewhere, and I'm pretty most peeps on this sub can relate to this shit.
